Polished porcelain can be slippery when wet, but outdoor porcelain is made differently. Here’s what to look for.
R ratings
You’ll often see porcelain described as R9 to R13. This comes from a German ramp test where the higher the number, the more grip. R11 is common for outdoor tiles.
The pendulum test (PTV)
In the UK, slip resistance is usually measured with a pendulum test. A Pendulum Test Value (PTV) of 36 or more is generally considered low slip risk in wet conditions. It’s the most useful number for outdoor areas.
Where it matters most
Pool surrounds, steps, ramps and slopes need the most care. Choose a textured outdoor finish, and check the manufacturer’s wet slip data for your exact tile.
How we help
Tell us where the tiles are going and we’ll check the slip data for the collections you like before we quote.
